sweet shade farm

Acres of avocados tucked between the mountains and the ocean provided an idyllic spot for the vision of The Sweet Shade Farmhouse—a “green” structure that complemented the gorgeous natural surroundings. We used building materials such as reclaimed wood, rusted metal, and rammed earth adobe to create a custom home that blends harmoniously into the environment. Inside and out, the house is a collaboration of custom craftsmanship and the handiwork of an incredible host of artists and artisans, including the owners themselves.

Throughout the house are handmade doors and windows, hand-carved stone sinks, handmade cabinets and shelving and hardware, and handcrafted doorknobs. The owner even handmade the adobe bricks. The care and intention with which this unique custom home was crafted are evident in every small detail, and in the breathtaking achievement of the project as a whole.

What the client had to say…

Some people find it stressful to build a house. It was the opposite for us—we enjoyed the process largely because Matt & the Upton crew are so fantastic! Everyone is pleasant to be around, extremely diligent, and the quality of work is top-notch. Even when the debris flow came through our project during construction, Matt reassured us they would help us clean up the mud. We were so lucky to go through that with them by our side! They have years of building experience and sound advice for details that come up in the process.
